(Here is a simple full body Somatic relaxation for you to try, please do not hesitate to contact Jolene if you have questions!)
Hanna Somatics is an integrative bodywork modality that gently releases habitual muscular holding patterns by using slow, mindful movements. Educator and client work together to address the disconnect between central (brain) and peripheral (muscular) nervous systems. The aim is to bring chronically contracted muscles back under conscious control and subsequently into a proper resting length and relaxation. This process of sensory motor training improves muscle function, increases body awareness and coordination - positively affecting all aspects of life. Not only is Hanna Somatics effective (often rapidly), it is empowering! This method is supported by the educator, the client is actively engaged in the process of becoming mindful of dysfunctional movement patterns and muscles and how to release them.
Each session begins with an intake interview, a postural analysis and gait assessment. This will help Jolene understand how you are holding tension in your body and how it is affecting your life. Unlike massage, Hanna Somatics is a movement-based proctol in which the client is fully clothed, but does still lie down on a massage table. Pillows and bolsters are used to ensure comfort and alignment. After taking a passive/relaxed range of motion assessment of the muscles to be worked with, the Somatic session begins. The client is asked to gently contract affected muscles - only to bring awareness to them. Without the sensory feedback of “contraction” chronically held muscles are difficult for the brain to consciously connect to. Once the client feels the muscle contraction, the sensation and action of relaxation can be re-learned. This simple pattern of gentle contract-sense-relax is repeated several times and applied throughout different affected areas. The movements are always within a pain-free range of motion and as a result, is quite relaxing and soothing as the client becomes more embodied and grounded in the present moment.
Jolene is currently a student of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, working towards her certification as a Hanna Somatic Educator (class of 2022) and is currently teaching the tradition of Thomas Hanna.
